Hi Larry, yes i remember you. You came to our stand that we had set up on the day and we chatted regarding your race car.
I would be sticking with the lever you currently have on (4.2)

I am not sure what valve body you have in place and how it has been set up. This can make a difference in what lever you use. When we spoke i don't think you were running the Griner t/brake at the time. If this is the case go of Griners recommendation's.

A 4.2 lever is generally used for quicker clamping ( Band to drum). We would only go the 5.0 lever on a big Hemi were the band would need to have that extra hold on the drum.

What you are looking at is quick clamp v extra hold (once it is clamped).

On a race car / street car were response matters ( during the on & off of your front band) the 4.2 is what works best.

Another thing you can have a look at while the trans is out, the front servo type. The early 62-70 front servo with 2 springs works best. Your later type will have 1 large spring (piston to retainer) and a cushion spring under the plunger.

Front band can be set at nipped up then backed off 1 3/4. (As some band cores can have a history of being out of shape i would suggest you check the front drum is spinning with ease without too much drag)

Hi Peter,
I spoke to you at the Rumble, I am the guy with the Griner transbrake. I have a question for you? I'm running a 727 with a 4.2 lever on the 2nd gear (solid) band with 1 3/4 turns clearance. On a good pass (10.96~11.05) the car will occassionally chirp the tyres on the 1~2 shift. The car weighs 2920 lbs with me in it, the car has about 440 hp, 4.88:1 diff gears and 31 x 13" tyres. Now the question is I have a 5.0 lever I'm thinking of fitting to this gearbox. Do you believe this will be beneficial or could it be detrimental, and what clearance should I give the band?
